The Farmhouse That Taught Me About Bad Insulation

Give me three minutes to tell you this story.
Even if you never call Groundhog Insulation Pros, this may help you avoid one of the most frustrating mistakes a homeowner can make, paying for insulation that still does not fix the comfort problem.

When people ask me why I got into the insulation business, it makes me chuckle a little bit because I first experienced firsthand what it really meant to have an insulation problem in my own house. So the background is my parents and I, we bought a farm a while back and it was this beautiful old farmhouse, right? But the part, the beauty of the farmhouse and, you know, the build and everything was great.

However, when the cold winds of winter would push in, the house would get really cold on the inside, and that's despite having two wood stoves going and electric heaters upstairs, you know? So, I checked out the insulation because the previous owner had said that they had paid somebody to put in insulation, it should all be good to go.

The Most Expensive Insulation Job Is the One You Pay for Twice

That is when I learned something every homeowner should know:
The most expensive insulation job is the one you pay for twice.

The materials had been paid for.
The work had been done.
On paper, the house “had insulation.”

But the insulation was not installed correctly, and the home was still leaking comfort and wasting energy.

So anyways, long story short, they had insulation installed, but it wasn't installed correctly and the crawl space, the expensive materials that were installed were falling out of the rafters because they weren't installed correctly, leaving gaps so that every time the wind blew, it blew up underneath the wooden floors into the house, freezing everybody out.

The ceiling, the roof, the attic, you know, the attic had, you know, minimum insulation, not installed correctly as well. And then we had this scuttle hole, is what we call it, but it's basically where you access the attic and it was basically just cut out of drywall and you're sitting on top of whatever was holding it in place, you know?

And so... During the cold of winter, the cold air was literally falling through the attic, through the scuttle holes, into the upstairs, freezing the room out. I mean, it was just extremely uncomfortable. And no matter how much you heated; it was just going right out the attic and right out the crawlspace.

Winter Misery Turns Into Summer Disaster

So, you know, we endured the winter, and we knew we had to do something about insulation, but what blew my mind was the fact that we had insulation, but the insulation by itself wasn't good enough because it wasn't installed correctly.

Then, of course, you know, spring came, and we had relief because of the milder temperatures, and then we looked forward to maybe a lower power bill.

Looking forward to milder temperatures and where we lived, you know, where you could reasonably expect a lower power bill going forward and relief from the strain on our wallet due to having to heat the home with two wood stoves where you had to buy wood and on top of that a high electric bill just to try to stay somewhat comfortable. And it was still freezing in the house in the coldest days.

We quickly learned that our tin roof was very unforgiving once temperatures went over 70 degrees and the tin roof basically would turn our attic space into a sauna we didn't order and such started to build up this pocket of heat that would then remember the scuttle hole we were talking about?

That scuttle hole now turned into a heating vent that allowed the hot 180-degree plus air from the attic to breathe into the upstairs area and heat the whole house from top to bottom, even on cooler days outside.

And then, of course, as the temperatures climbed to the 80s, mid-80s, 90s, it just turned into an oven instead of a sauna that even the biggest sauna aficionados would not want to be in.

The Failed Fan “Solution”

And so, the solution of the previous owners obviously was to put a fan up there. Well, if you put that fan in that scuttle hole and you turn it and it blows in the wrong direction, it's gonna suck all that insulation that's already underperforming and all the dust into your whole house, and you'll have itchy eyes and you'll have breathing problems.

If you turn the fan the other direction, it basically starts to suck maybe some of the hot air out into the already hot attic, but needless to say, the setup was not efficient at all.

What We Actually Needed

So what we were in desperate need of was for somebody to come out and properly install insulation in the crawl space, properly install a vapor barrier, properly air seal the whole house top and bottom, put the adequate amount of insulation, put a hatch cover in to make sure that the scuttle hole doesn't leak cold air into the house in the winter and hot air in the summer.

And in our case, we also needed a solar attic fan to pull all that hot air out of the attic during the hottest summer months, which then, of course, allowed us to have a very, very low AC bill because it no longer had to contend with cooling off the upstairs and counteracting the hot attic.

Where the ROI Finally Made Sense

Here is where the return on investment finally made sense to me.

We were already spending money.
We were buying wood.
We were running electric heaters.
We were paying high power bills.
We were putting extra strain on the heating and cooling system.
And we still were not comfortable.

A proper insulation upgrade is not only an expense. It can be a way to stop wasting money on comfort you never actually feel.

Having insulation is not the same thing as having insulation that actually works.

The Hidden Problem Most Homeowners Never See

That experience changed how I look at home comfort.

Most homeowners are not ignoring the problem because they do not care. The problem is hidden.

You cannot see crawl space insulation falling down while you are sitting in the living room.
You cannot see hot attic air pouring through an unsealed attic access while you are making dinner.
You cannot see missing air sealing around plumbing, wiring, light fixtures, and attic penetrations from the hallway.

But a smart homeowner like you knows this:

When the house keeps giving you the same symptoms—cold floors, hot upstairs rooms, drafts, dust, high energy bills, or an HVAC system that never seems to catch up—the home is telling you something.

That is the time to have it checked.

Why Groundhog Exists

So that's what prompted me to find an insulation solution and I discovered it was hard to find contractors that would do the job right, and it was hard to find contractors that knew how to do it correctly and were willing to put in the effort.

And part of the problem is, like, when you pay somebody to do insulation, you don't wanna go crawl into that crawl space, or you don't wanna walk or go up in that attic and check and make sure, and even if you could, you wouldn't really know because, you know, you wouldn't know if it was installed correctly or not until later on when you realize you spent all this money on this expensive material and it wasn't put in properly and the people you paid to put it in won't answer the phone.

So that brings us to Groundhog.

And that is why I say:
The most expensive insulation job is the one you pay for twice.

We set Groundhog up so that when you are ready to install insulation, you can do it with peace of mind, knowing that it's done correctly, and we back that up with a lifetime guarantee of our installs.

The other thing that we offer, and this is based on also my situation, we found out very quick that it's not cheap to do insulation, right? So, but the comfort and the savings on your power bill are more than worth it.

So what we did with Groundhog is we made a platform available to you guys to see if you qualify for 0% financing for shorter terms or maybe smaller payments for longer terms just to make it affordable.

What We Do for North Carolina Homeowners

And that is why Groundhog Insulation Pros exists.

We help homeowners like you in the Triad find and fix the hidden insulation problems that make homes too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, dusty, drafty, uncomfortable, and expensive to heat and cool.

When we inspect your home, we look at the full picture, including attic insulation, crawl space insulation, air leaks, vapor barriers, attic access points, and ventilation.

If your attic, crawl space, vapor barrier, air sealing, attic access, and ventilation are already in good shape, you may not need us. If your insulation looks good, your air sealing is solid, and your attic and crawl space are performing well, we will tell you.

We also know insulation work is an investment. That is why we offer financing options, including potential 0% financing for shorter terms for qualified homeowners, and longer-term payment options for those who prefer smaller monthly payments.

That way, you can take care of the problem now, enjoy a more comfortable home, and start reducing wasted energy without having to put the entire project off.

Groundhog Insulation Pros backs our installs with a lifetime guarantee, so you can have peace of mind knowing the work was done correctly.
